Alan Stuart Paton
(1903-1988), famed author of Cry, the beloved country (1948), was also a founding member of the Liberal Party of South Africa (1953). Paton continued to write novels and poetry throughout his life, but he also wrote extensively on matters of a political nature. The Alan Paton Centre and Struggle Archives therefore holds not only Alan Paton's literary works and related documents and manuscripts, but also papers pertaining to the Liberal Party and other institutions and organisations who contributed to the struggle against Apartheid in South Africa. PLEASE NOTE: Mrs Jewel Koopman will retire at the end of March 2012. This is a great loss not only to the Alan Paton Centre but also to the University and we thank her for running the Alan Paton Centre so efficiently for more than 12 years. Please direct all research queries to Estelle at liebbe@ukzn.ac.za tel +27 (0)33 260 6496. Due to Mrs Koopman's retirement, it is imperative for researchers and visitors to contact the Paton Centre well in advance to announce their intended visit. The Paton Centre might have to close for short periods during the course of this year, due to staff training. We are aware that this website is somewhat out of date.
