Gandhi Centenary Conference, 7-9 June 1993

This conference marked the centenary of Mahatma Gandhi’s deeply humiliating ejection from a train onto the Pietermaritzburg station platform, which experience transformed his philosophy of life, and lead towards the development of Satyagraha, with which he was in later years to lead India.  It was the first major conference to which the APC was linked.  The conference papers are housed at the APC.
Selected proceedings of this conference were published as a book entitled Gandhi and South Africa: principles and politics, co-edited by Judith Brown and Martin Prozesky, and published by the University of Natal Press in South Africa ( ISBN:0-8690-917-2) and St Martin’s Press, New York.  The foreword is by David Maughan Brown, who was head of the Alan Paton Centre Advisory Committee.
