Nicholas Smith, assistant professor of political science at the City University of New York – City College, visited the Alan Paton Center in January 2019. He is conducting research for a book on the relationship between death and state formation in South Africa from apartheid through democracy. He visited the Paton Center to conduct research on funerals and political violence in the Midlands and Durban areas during the struggle against apartheid. His first book, Contradictions of Democracy: Vigilantism and Rights in Post-Apartheid South Africa (Oxford University Press, 2019), also drew from materials collected at the Paton Center.
